The Disneyland Resort officially sounded the death nell of the famous Rocket Rods on Saturday, citing the attraction's performance problems and frequent repairs. Many Disney fans were sad to see the attraction go. However, resort president Cynthia Harriss said the attraction's popularity was part of the problems, as frequent shutdowns and "complexities" of operating the Rods often led to extensive lines and wait times.
The Rocket Rods opened with the new Tomorrowland back in May of 1998, taking over the track of what used to hold the People Mover. The Rods traveled up to 35mph and covered the track in about three minutes, while the People Mover took around sixteen.
No word has yet been released on what attraction will replace the Rocket Rods. Intercot West thinks it might be nice to see the return of the People Mover. However, right now rumors say Buzz Lightyear might be taking over the Circle Vision theater area of the attraction. But what will happen to the infamous track that covers all of Tomorrowland? Only time will tell.
