Description:
Space Mountain is one of the most innovative roller coasters at any of the Disney parks. It uses the benefit of darkness to make guests feel as though they are being thrown through space at very high speeds. This is definitely one attraction not to be missed.
Reviews:
Space Mountain is a great ride. This ride has also been made better by the new speakers that have been placed above your head on the head rests. These play the tunes of legendary gutarest Dick Dale. This song played is an old classic (Carnival of TheAnimals) with a 90's beat of surf music.
This ride also has a great waiting area. It has about 12 televisions that play newscasts, commercials, and even music videos. And a computer moniter that warns you of the risks of "Traveling with Space Mountain". As you enter the "launch area" there is an Inter-Galactic probe about 60 feet long that hangs over the loading track.
As you get to the cockpit of this probe be sure to look inside. You will see an Astronaut.
Then you load. "Space Mountain this is Launch contol you are ready for launch" it says into your ears. Then you're off.
As you go up the first lift you theres nothing much. But as you turn the corner you see a metior shower. You pass that onto another lift with strobe lights, and fog. After that you are off for one of the Greatest Rides ever built for Disney.

"I'd like to add a few comments regarding your Space Mountain review. I agree that it is the best roller coaster ride in the park, perhaps anywhere. But I have been disappointed that the Dick Dale soundtrack has been inoperable much of the time. I was fortunate to hear it once right after the sound system was first implemented. What a rush! Perfect mood music, perfectly synchronized with the twists and turns. But I have returned to that ride about 10 times from last April to last January, and it was broken each time. I think Disneyland should concentrate on fixing this system as it is the small details that make Disneyland so special. Has anyone else heard the soundtrack? What do you think?"
Kristin Kolberg
In response to Kristin Kolberg's review of Space Mountain and its soundtrack I'd have to say I fully agree... the soundtrack adds such an amazing sence of exhileration to an already great roller coaster and with it often unoperational (I was lucky enough to hear it a few times though) it detracts from the overall experience of the ride a great deal. I don't know what the problem is with this system, but my hope is that Disney Imagineers and technicians will realize its importance and fix it soon for all visitors to experience.

I have to tell you. I have been on space mountain many numerous times since they put in the new sound system. And everytime I have heard it. It is an awesome soundtrack and it does add more feeling to the turns and the drops. They turns seem sharper and the drops seem longer. It IS one of Disney's best rides of all times.

This is definently my favourite ride in Disneyland. It's face paced and exciting, I never get tired of going on it. And the soundtrack is amazing! I read some other reviews and people were saying how the soundtrack wasn't working for the most part. I must've went on it over ten times in my stay at Disneyland and it only didn't work once. Don't miss this ride, unless you get motion sick very easily. Everyone in my family felt sick after they get off except me. Everyone should definently try this once, you can't miss this ride.

Just to update information about Space Mountain's audio system. After the system was installed, it began to have many glitches and problems. The system was shut down for some time, but now (according to a cast member) is operating perfectly. If you missed riding this great roller coaster without the accompaniment of it's soundtrack, you must go back and ride it again!

I guess I'm the minority with regards to the soundtrack in Space Mountain. I LOVE the ride but didn't think much of the soundtrack at all. I rode Space Mountain when they first opened it and think that all the changes they've made over the years have kind of ruined it. Before they were sponsered by FedEx, it use to give you an eerie feeling as you were walking through the wait area and only heard the flight-control voices and the eerie sound effects going on while you heard the rumble of the cars racing through. Now, they ruined it by placing all these TV monitors throughout with very dumb so-called commercials going on and teenage beebop music playing. The FedEx robot in the loading station also takes away from the original "serious" intensions of the ride and makes it look/feel more kiddie like, which is a dissapointment. As for the speakers in the headrest, they detract from the overall ride experience. Think about it...if you were really hurling through space on a rocket, would you want the sounds of an electric guitar blasting in your ears...especially sounds that become dated real soon? Maybe to a 15yo, but not to a 30yo!

I hate roller coasters and I hadnt ridden Space Mountain ever before until last October when my friend somehow managed to get me on it for the first time in my 17 years. Mind you I had ridden Montezuma's Revenge at Knotts so I really dont know why I was being such a wimp. Anyway this is a pretty good ride even for the roller coaster phobic because its just thrilling enough to let you think you've acomplished something. A tip: We went on a sunday and we went on it about an hour before the park closed. Ok...we waited seriously less then 10 minutes. We walked all the way to that big main room and it was like...5 minutes of waiting. Space Mountain is definatley an end-of-the-day ride.

The main thing that I'm dropping you this line for is the Space Mountain soundtrack : I just found out, quite by coincidence, that it is actually Dick Dale's take on an ancient piece, Aquarium from St Saens' Carnival of the Animals. I had just heard it somewhere in a music store and recognized the theme, and, sure enough, it was nearly exactly what I had heard on the ride; but of course with that great guitar/rock'n'roll take on it. But other than that, it was note-for-note, Carnival of the Animals. (That part near the end of the ride, where the music goes all soft and music-boxy, is how the original COTA goes most all the way thru it) ... amazing how Dick Dale made it such a fantastic soundtrack for a space ride!
